Needs-based assessment of twice-exceptional gifted students: The S&W-Heuristic

Misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses of gifted students with co-occurring learning-, developmental behavioural disorders are often mentioned in literature practice. Consequently, these Twice-Exceptional (2E) fall between two stools regarding appropriate psycho-educational interventions. This article offers a research practice informed assessment procedure, namely the Strengths Weaknesses Heuristic (S&W-Heuristic), that can help to tackle such problems case giftedness or any 2E is suspected. S&W-Heuristic was developed via method design research. Initially assess (suspicion of) co-occurrence intellectual (IG) autism needs-based way, though, subsequently (potential) 2E-students general. The systematicity may psychologists special remedial educationalists reveal hitherto camouflaged strengths weaknesses underachieving smart understand their ambivalent needs. Being product research, this also prelude new theoretical perspectives concepts IG 2E. By shifting from ‘classification-based’ dynamic ‘dimensional-based’ definition 2E, talent will be recognised more effectively get opportunity flourish.
